Excitement in Downtown Kalamazoo

In the last decade the downtown of Kalamazoo has really caught fire. Outstanding fusion restaurants and lively nightspots, art hops and summer festivals, coffeehouses and museums -- it's all right here, and the Kalamazoo House Bed and Breakfast is right in the middle of it.

Restaurants -- We can't list all the amazing restaurants in Kalamazoo's vibrant downtown, but these are some of our favorites that are within walking distance of the inn...

  • The Epic Bistro, an upscale fusion restaurant located downtown on the Kalamazoo Mall, with a wine list of over 200 bottles (40+ by the glass!)and fantastic food.
  • Fandango's Tapas Bistro, is a lively meeting spot with a menu of 44 delicious "small plates", and a long list of specialty martinis and sangrias as well.
  • Rustica, one of Kalamazoo's very newest and very popular restaurants, offers delicious Mediterranean cuisine and an extensive wine list.
  • Mangia Mangia Italian Restaurant, one of the newest additions to the popular Kalamazoo Mall, offers traditional Italian fare and an extensive wine list and full bar. Enjoy dining in their outside patio.
  • The Union Cabaret and Grill, a unique partnership between Western Michigan University's fine arts department and the Millennium Restaurant Group, with glorious food. Check out the live shows!
  • Food Dance Cafe, a restaurant focusing on organic and locally-grown foods with amazingly imaginative dishes.
  • London Grill -- go here for traditional British favorites and contemporary Indian fare in a comfortable pub environment.
  • The Blue Dolphin, where you can get authentic Greek-centered cuisine for very reasonable prices.
  • Nightspots

  • Burdick's Bar and Grill, in the ground level of the stunning Radisson Plaza Hotel. A great place to watch some sports.
  • Monaco Bay Dueling Piano Bar -- need we say more? This piano bar, where American Idol finalist Matt Giraud got his start, is always hopping.
  • Ouzo's, a very European-feeling pub with excellent electronic music.
  • Papa Pete's, housed in the same building as The Blue Dolphin. The dancing here is a huge draw.
  • Rugger's Up and Under, a classic college bar with a dedicated dance area.

  • Breweries

  • The Kalamazoo Brewing Company, one of Kalamazoo's landmarks. Bell's Beer is shipped far and wide due to its superb taste.  The downtown Eclectic Cafe is a must, especially in the summer when the bands play on the large patio.
  • Art, Museums, and Theatre

  • The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (located right next door!) is an excellent place to browse exciting art and sculptures.
  • The Kalamazoo Valley Museum is a museum that focuses on "history, science and technology," and is located right on the Kalamazoo Mall.
  • The Kalamazoo Public Library, on the corner of Rose and South Street, was awarded the National Library of the Year award in 2002.
  • The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, across from Bronson Park, consistently has top-notch plays and productions.
  • Farmer's Alley Threatre,
  • New Vic Theatre,
  • The Irving S. Gilmore Theatre, sponsored by WMU, is also a great place to catch a play.
  • West Michigan Glass Society, a society of over 100 area emerging and professional glass artists, students and friends of glass art, which offers one-day and longer classes and workshops. Check out their "Explore Glass Art Days".
  • Art Hop is an exciting community art event that occurs the first Friday of every month.
  • The Epic Center is where you want to go for lesser-known, more avant garde plays and productions.
  • Chenery Auditorium, yet another place to catch productions, has a beautifully antique interior with excellent acoustics.
  • The State Theatre is a well known venue for music and comedy concerts. The interior is a very pretty reproduction of a spanish castle courtyard under the stars.
  • Recreation and Fitness

  • Climb Kalamazoo, a cool place where you can practice your climbing skills against faux rock faces several stories high.
  • Kal-Haven Trail , and Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, are connecting bicycle trails that take you 38 miles right to the shore of Lake Michigan at South Haven. Our inn is just a few blocks from the trail, and we can provide indoor bike storage!
